The Painted Churches

Moldavian Monasteries Tour by Car

Moldovia – the north eastern province of Romania – is renowned for the 'Painted Monasteries of Bucovina'. These triumphs of Byzantine influenced art reflect the flowering of Moldavian civilisation in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Day 1

Bucharest - Braşov - Sighişoara

Departure from Bucharest.

Transfer to Brasov city (160 km). City tour of Brasov, visiting the Black Church. Transfer Brasov – Sighisoara city (120 km). Optional, dinner at Casa cu Cerb (The House with Stag) Restaurant - its name comes from the exterior mural painting. Accommodation at Sighisoara Hotel *** in Sighisoara citadel

Day 2

Sighişoara - Red Lake - Piatra Neamţ

Breakfast at Sighisoara Hotel, visit Sighisoara citadel.

Transfer to Piatra Neamt (185 km), crossing over the Eastern Carpathians through the spectacular Gorges of Bicaz

Piatra Neamt is a touristic town in the valley of Bistrita river, one of the most picturesque areas of Romanian Sub-Carpathian hills. On the way, stop at The Red Lake – a beautiful touristic resort nearby the only natural dam lake, moulded because of a mountain fall in the 19th century

Day 3

Piatra Neamţ - Monasteries - Târgu Neamţ - Suceava

Breakfast at Ceahlau Hotel in Piatra Neamt.

Visit Varatec, Agapia and Neamt Monasteries. Optional, lunch. Transfer from Targu Neamt to Suceava (55 km)

Day 4

Suceava - Monasteries - Gura Humorului

Breakfast at Classic Hotel in Suceava.

Visit the Princely Fortress in Suceava. Transfer Suceava - Gura Humorului town (40 km). Visit Humorului, Voronet, Moldovita and Sucevita Monasteries – included in UNESCO World Heritage List

Day 5

Suceviţa - Bistriţa - Braşov Meadows

Breakfast at Sucevita Rural Guest House.

Transfer Sucevita – Braşov Meadows (Poiana Braşov) resort, about 440 km, passing through Campulung Moldovenesc town, Bargau Pass (Borgo Pass from ‘Dracula’ novel) and Bistrita town, Targu Mures town and Sighisoara citadel.

Optional, lunch on the route at Golden Crown Restaurant in Bistrita

Day 6

Braşov Meadows - Bucharest

Breakfast. Transfer Poiana Brasov - Bucharest

Romanian Orthodoxy, the National Religion

The Romanian autocephalous church in the Eastern Orthodox faith gets the lion's share (and lamb's share) of the religious in Romania, with the Catholic Church making up a distant second place.

Catholic includes Roman and Greek (Unitate) Catholics, and Protestant includes Lutheran, Presbyterian and all others except Pentecostal and Baptist

Romanian Orthodox

It is the national religion with 87% of Romanians professing to the faith.

It is unique in the world, as it is the only Orthodox church which conducts it's daily services in a Romance language. Most other Orthodox churches use the Cyrillic alphabet, and indeed, Romanians used to hear their liturgy in "church Slavonic".

Most of the wooden Maramureş churches however, belong to the Uniate sect of the Catholic Church, an interesting amalgam of Roman and Eastern rites, the Vatican's compromise to win more hearts and souls in central Europe and the Balkans.

4500 Churches

Romanians are indeed a faithful people, with most including the church in their daily life as part of their routine. Even in the busy city, ordinary Romanians stop in to light candles for the living and the dead and say their prayers.

The over 4500 churches are complimented by 400 monasteries and over 8000 monks and nuns.
