The Retezat national
park
The Main Crest Summer Months (May - October)
Ratio: 6 Hikers per Guide
Day 1
Leave from Cârnic, the entry point for the Retezat National
Park, from where after a trek of 2 hours, you come across the Rocky
Chalet, the main launching point for treks into the Retezat Massif.
Overnight with dinner at the chalet.
Day 2
An early morning, after a breakfast at Rocky Chalet, you follow
along the Rocky Valley to Happy Saddle and Peleaga Peak (at 2509m).
Then continu on to Peleaga Saddle, up to Puppet Peak (2508m), and
acrossed the Dark Gates to Geleşu Lake. The day's hike
ends back at the Rocky Chalet, the whole trip taking around 11
invigorating and beautiful hours.
Day 3
The third day starts with a bit shorter hike, but also a bit
more difficult, starting with a climb up to Gentian Chalet, and
then a climb along Rocky Crest, covering the distance passing
across Happy Saddle and Happy Peak II, and then back over to the
Gentian Chalet along the Stoney Spine and then back down to
Rocky Cabin for dinner and an overnight rest. About
6 or 7 hours in all, but a great work-out.
Day 4
After breakfast, an easy climb along the Lolaia Crest up to
Reteat Peak, the namesake mountain for this inspiring national park.
Return trail via Lolaia Saddleand then a decent down into the Ştevia
valley right up to the Little River Motel, where you have dinner as
dusk falls.
Day 5
Your fifth day in the Retezat mountains is a cultural one, full
of religion and history with your visit to the Craghorn Castle, the
famed Castle of the Carpathians from Jules Verne. Then
on to the Craghorn Monastery, the ancient Roman city and regional
Dacian province capital of Sarmisegetuza, and the oldest Christian
church in Romania, the Densuş Church.
Summer from May through October
Ratio: 6-8 Hikers per Guide
Day 1
Arrive in Braşov, Romania's fairy-tale town, where you visit
the stately Black Church, the charming main square ringed by
Saxon buildings, and learn about the first Romanian school, and
marvel at the Braşov Fortress overlooking the old town.
Then on to Râşnov Castle with it's panoramic views and
massive size, and then you continue up towards Zărneşti and the
Leafy Glade Chalet, the main base of operations for treks into
the incredible jutting thrust of the King's Rock mountains.
Dinner and overnight at the chalet.
Day
2
Up early for breakfast at the Leafy Glade Chalet, and then a
climb on the trail up to The Lance (Deubel), crossing the northern
spine to Dark Hollows Peak and on to Sharp Peak at 7053ft. You then
return to the Leafy Glade Chalet. The tour lasts about 10
hours.
Day 3
The third day is a bit more difficult from a technical point of
view, traversing the Lower Ranges, and Spear Notch to Secluded
Meadow, climbing up the southern crest to Bottoms Saddle,
Stoney Balcony and then the Leafy Glade Chalet for dinner and an
overnight rest. About a 10 hour long day.
Day 4
After breakfast, you climb through the Middle Range through the
Anghelide trail and then with a trek around the Termopile descending
into the Poduri Valley or Călineţ Dale, to the Leafy Glade Chalet.
About 9 to 10 hours in total.
Day 5
Soak up the local upper Bârsa land culture with a visit to Bran
Castle, and a trip down to the Royal Peleş Domain with Peleş Castle,
the Sinaia Monastery and the Bucegi Natural Park museum.

Hiking the Bucegi Natural Park
The Bucegi Massif, May to October
Ratio: 6-8 hikers per guide
Sleeping Bag Required
Day 1
Arrive at Sinaia and visit Peleş Castle, the Sinaia Monastery
and check out the fine natural history exhibits at the local Bucegi
Mountains Musseum. Then soar into the sky in a cable car
gondola all the way up to 2000m, where you will overnight in a
mountain chalet with dinner.
Day 2
An early start, after breakfast, we will trek across the Bucegi
Plateau on the Burnt Rock trail, then going down to into the heart
of the Bucegi Massif at the Ialomiţa Cave and the Hermitage built
intot he rock there. Then a climb up to the Old Women
Chalet where we'll spend the night. About 10 hours from
chalet to chalet.
Day 3
From the Old Women Chalet, we walk over to the Heroes' Cross, a
massive monument to the Romanians who perished in WWI, towering over
the deep cut of the Prahova Valley with super views.
Then on to the highest peak in the Bucegi Mountains, Omu
Peak, and descending through the Cornpone Horns to the Mălăieşti
Chalet for a rest overnight. About 8 hours in duration.
Day 4
After breakfast at the Mălăieşti Chalet, we climb once again up
Omu Peak and down again towards the town of Bran along the Holey
Valley or along the Mount Ţigăneşti and Rocky Saddle way (see
Map here). Around 8 to 9 hours to Bran.
Day 5
A great day of history and culture with a visit to Bran Castle,
the Râşnov Fortress and also a visit to Braşov with a visit to the
Black Church, Town Square, and the first Romanian school, the Braşov
fortifications, and more!
